This page tracks updates made to the MediaWiki software and various configuration changes that might affect users. (Note: Most of the dates are based on U.S. Central Time.)

MediaWiki upgraded to version 1.43.6^↗ and Cargo^↗ to version 3.8.5 (note that there is no connection between Cargo's version numbering and MediaWiki's).

The main MediaWiki database has been exported, deleted, and recreated anew, reducing the actual disk usage of the relevant files by nearly 100 MB, but (again) hardly affecting the disk usage reported in cPanel^↗ of both the site as a whole and the database in particular. Bizarre. However, by deleting a few large unused extensions that come bundled with MediaWiki and some old web traffic logs that were never being looked at anyway, we have gotten our disk usage down to 660 MB. And there is much rejoicing throughout the land.

An attempt was made to "optimize" the text table, to try to recover disk space following the compression of old revisions, but it did not work.

The wiki is "reopened" after being read-only since 2025-11-30. A maintenance script^↗ was run to compress old page revisions in the MediaWiki database. Unfortunately, the anticipated reduction in disk usage did not happen, for some reason. So, the site is still nearing its 1-GB disk quota.

Extension:Page Forms^↗ and Extension:Replace Text^↗ are enabled. The latter can only be used by admins. This should be changing Sometime Soon.

The "CargoHelper" gadget has been enabled by default for all users. It provides support to add new performance and video entries on songs pages via a dialog. Please see its user handbook for details. Users can manually disable it for themselves via the Gadget preferences.

The "dynamicCargoLoading" gadget has been enabled by default for all users. It provides on-demand loading of performance sub-tables in the Songs listing. Users can manually disable it for themselves via the Gadget preferences.

Thanks to Extension:NamespaceRelations^↗, we now have actual tabs providing access to documentation subpages in the Template, Module, and Data namespaces, so we no longer need the site notice to do that in the Data namespace.

Extension:DismissableSiteNotice^↗ is now enabled, so logged-in users can hide the site notice after they've seen it (until a new notice is created, at which point it will be displayed for everyone again). This is implemented using a browser cookie.

Extension:Cargo^↗ installed and enabled. A separate database was created for the extension's data, as explained in the docs^↗. Apart from that, the default configuration is being used.

5 new extensions have been enabled: Poem^↗ (useful for lyrics and some quotes from social media), TemplateData^↗ (a possible solution for template documentation… but maybe not), TemplateStyles^↗ (might make styling provided by templates easier to implement/maintain and more flexible), MultiBoilerplate^↗ (allows for "preload" type content to be selected by users when creating a new page), and NamespaceRelations^↗ (allows new tabs to be added to pages).

For a time, CrawlerProtection^↗ was enabled, but then it was abandoned in favor of a more tailored approach^↗. This might render some existing links here useless for (non-logged-in) readers (by preventing the viewing of page diffs), but it's not nearly as draconian as the extension was.

MediaWiki:Sidebar changed to provide the ability to check the size of the job queue [documentation^↗] (along with the rest of the site statistics) and to purge the cache from any page (although note that it doesn't make sense to use purge on a "Special:" page). These links appear in the "tools" menu, the exact position of which differs by skin.

"Tmp:" and "Cat:" namespace aliases added.

Database changed to remove a previously inaccessible page in the main namespace (was hidden by the page Data:VideoMetaTestData.json in the Data namespace, now deleted).

Namespaces for YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok content renamed from shorter versions, which have been retained as namespace aliases ("YT", "FB", "IG", "TT"). Sometime before this, "AJW" was added as an alias of the "Project" namespace ("Angelina Jordan Wiki"). Now all short subject namespace aliases have talk equivalents ending with a "T" (e.g., "AJWT" is the talk namespace for "AJW" subject namespace).
