"I Put a Spell on You" is a 1956 song co-written and originally recorded by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. It has since become a widely covered classic, with notable versions by artists such as Nina Simone and Creedence Clearwater Revival.[1]scope: entire paragraph

Angelina recorded the music video of the song in early 2015, but it was uploaded only on 2016-09-27 to YouTube. She then performed it live at various concerts in 2017 through 2018, and at the German version of the Little Big Shots TV show in early 2017.

Angelina's studio version of "I Put a Spell on You" was recorded on or prior to 2015-02-03[Note 1] (about 3½ weeks after her 9th birthday) and was released as a digital single on 2016-09-16,[2] as a black-and-white music video on her official YouTube channel on 2016-09-27,[3] and on Angelina's self-titled EP on 2017-11-27.[4]

Music video

The music video purports to show her entering a recording studio and recording her vocals "live" as the music is played by the musicians (including the trumpet player from Norske Talenter — see also "Portrait of a Child"). It is obvious from the way the music video is edited that the visuals were recorded in multiple takes.[Note 2] What is not obvious is whether any of the vocals heard in the audio were actually recorded in any of those takes, or whether they were captured in a separate session before the visuals were recorded.

For a time, the "I Put a Spell on You" music video was the most viewed video on Angelina's official YouTube channel, reaching over 4.5 million views by 2018-07-03.[5] By 2020-02-06, "Back to Black" had overtaken "I Put a Spell on You" for that distinction.[6] (As of 2022-09-08, this is still the case, with "Back to Black" having almost 11.9 million views and "I Put a Spell on You" almost 10.2 million.)[7]

The claim that the black-and-white music video for "I Put a Spell on You" was recorded on or before 2015-02-03 is based on a Twitter post made on that date by the production company Billy Budd Film which contained a picture of Angelina and the band members on the set of the music video, and stated (translated from Norwegian): "We produce music videos for @angelinajordanA with direction by @PerHeimly!".[8]

In a YouTube video posted to the Song and Heart↗ channel on 2015-05-09, titled Angelina Jordan to participate in music video↗ (now set to "private", so it is no longer visible by the general public), three still images from the music video were shown (see below). The video description linked to a Facebook post↗ (unfortunately, also no longer visible) by Billy Budd Filmproduksjon↗ that was titled "A long process is soon over", in which it was reportedly stated that "Angelina's video is ready for launch". The latter claim, unfortunately, turned out to be overly optimistic, and it would take more than 16 months for the music video to finally be released. The reason for the long delay is not known.

  2. ↑ The most obvious indication of this is when Angelina suddenly switches from being isolated from the musicians in a small booth, singing into a "shotgun mic", to standing right in front of the band, singing into an old-fashioned looking "floor mic" (and then back again at the end of the video). But there are more subtle clues that even the shots of her singing into the shotgun mic were done in multiple takes; for example, in some of those shots the piano player can be seen in a reflection on the left side of the screen and in others only the piano is seen and not the piano player.
