"Gloomy Sunday" is a song written in 1932 by Rezső Seress and published in 1933 with new lyrics by László Jávor. Later, Sam M. Lewis wrote the English lyrics that are most associated with the song, for its first recording in English, in 1936, by Hal Kemp. A 1941 recording by Billie Holiday is the most well known version of the song today.[1]scope: entire paragraph
Angelina auditioned for Norske Talenter with this song, singing it in the style of Holiday. Soon after that episode of the show aired, video of her performance quickly went viral online and led to worldwide media coverage of her before she even sang in the semifinals of the competition.[2] In parallel she recorded the song for the soundtrack of the final episode of Lilyhammer season 3 (where she also performed "I'm a Fool to Want You" in a guest appearance as a bar singer). In May 2025, Mery posted a video on her TikTok of Angelina performing the full song recently in a home setting, now also including the 2nd verse.
