Norske Talenter (literally Norwegian Talents, but commonly known in English as Norway's Got Talent, or NGT for short) is Norway's edition of the Got Talent franchise↗ of TV talent shows.[1] Angelina won the sixth season of the show in 2014, becoming the its youngest winner[2] up to that time (and still the youngest, as of 2022).[1]

Background

Norske Talenter first aired on 2008-02-22. The show follows the format of most Got Talent programs, with initial auditions followed by "judges' cuts", and then live semifinals and finals. The competition is open to all kinds of acts and to contestants of any age. The youngest contestant ever was 4 years old. The oldest was 81. In the show's first five seasons, through 2012, it had been won by a 16-year-old singer (Erlend Bratland), a hip-hop dance group of 17- and 18-year-olds (Quick), a 23-year-old rapper (Kristian Rønning, known as Sirius), an 11-year-old dancer (Daniel Johansen Elmhari), and a 17-year-old classical singer (Stine Hole Ulla).[1]

Although the first five seasons had all aired in consecutive years, there was no 2013 season after the fifth season ended on 2012-12-07.[3]

In preparation for the sixth season, preliminary auditions not for broadcast (sometimes called "precast" auditions or "tests") were held in several places around Norway beginning in late 2013. These would have been conducted by the show's producers, not the celebrity judges. It has been said that contestants could also be "cast" on the show based on submitted recordings of their talents. It is not known whether Angelina went to the preliminary tests in person or submitted a recording of herself. Nor is it known when either of these things happened.

On-camera auditions were conducted in Trondheim, Os, and Oslo. They were broadcast on the show in that order, in separate episodes covering the different locations. To be more specific, beginning with the season premiere on 2014-01-17, the auditions from Trondheim aired in the first two episodes, those from Os in the next two, and those from Oslo in episodes five through seven.[4]

Judges

The judges for the 2014 season were:

  • Mia Gundersen – 52-year-old Norwegian actress and singer
  • Omer Bhati – 28-year-old Norwegian dancer and rapper
  • Lisa Tønne – 36-year-old Iranian/Norwegian comedian and actress
  • Bjarte Hjelmeland – 43-year-old Norwegian actor, theater director, and musician

Angelina's performances

Audition

Angelina auditioned singing "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday over a prerecorded instrumental track. This aired in the fifth episode on 2014-03-07. It is not known when it was recorded, but based on the appearance of the venue and Angelina's contestant number, 7008, the location was almost certainly Oslo. Other contestants having numbers beginning with 7 are known to have auditioned in Oslo. Video of Angelina's performance was posted online by TV 2 at their website and on YouTube. The YouTube video went viral, leading to coverage by media outlets around the world, including Time, CNN, The Mirror (in the UK), People, and The Hollywood Reporter, all within four days of the broadcast. Second round

In the second round, Angelina performed "I'm a Fool to Want You" a cappella, again in the style of Billie Holiday. While the song choice was almost certainly her own, the decision to sing it a cappella was not hers: all singers who did not play an instrument had to sing a cappella in the second round.

This was a "judges' elimination" round, in which the judges saw groups of similar acts all in a row, one after another (as opposed to different types of acts being presented in a more or less arbitrary order, as in the first round). This was presumably so that a predetermined number of acts of each type could pass into the next round, since that round was going to be broadcast live.

The session in which Angelina and the other solo singers performed apparently happened on 2014-02-07 in Oslo (see Age on Norske Talenter) and was broadcast on 2014-03-28, in the 8th episode of the season (the first of two episodes covering this round of the competition). According to what was presented in the broadcast, Angelina performed last. Unlike in the other rounds, there was no live audience and the judges did not give each act feedback after they performed. Immediately following Angelina's performance (again, assuming the way the episode was edited matched reality), the contestants went backstage and the judges conferred in private to choose who would move on to the semifinals.

Semifinals

In the third round of the competition, the shows began to be broadcast live from Oslo. In the first of these — the 10th episode of the season, on 2014-04-11 — Angelina sang Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" accompanied by guitarist Tommy Kristiansen, who had also accompanied her when she sang "Fly Me to the Moon" on the talk show Senkveld a month before. Angelina was the first act to be voted into the finals.

Final

In the live final episode on 2014-05-23, Angelina sang "Summertime" accompanied by trumpet player Eivind Hannisdal[5] and a prerecorded instrumental track in the style of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's 1958 recording for their joint album Porgy & Bess↗.

Angelina won the competition with 46% of the audience vote,[2] in a field of 10 final acts.[6] The second- and third-place acts (announced in a random order[7]), were 20-year-old dancer Daniel Grindeland and the four-member dance ensemble Juice Crew, aged 19–22.
