Norske Talenter (literally Norwegian Talents, but commonly known in English as Norway's Got Talent, or NGT for short) is Norway's edition of the Got Talent franchise of TV talent shows.[1] Angelina won the sixth season of the show in 2014, becoming the its youngest winner[2] up to that time (and still the youngest, as of 2022).[1]

Background

Norske Talenter first aired on 2008-02-22.[1] The show follows the format of most Got Talent programs, with initial auditions followed by "judges' cuts", and then live semifinals and finals. The competition is open to all kinds of acts and to contestants of any age. The youngest contestant ever was 4 years old, the oldest past 90.[3] In the show's first five seasons, through 2012, it had been won by a 16-year-old singer (Erlend Bratland), a hip-hop dance group of 17- and 18-year-olds (Quick), a 23-year-old rapper (Kristian Rønning, known as Sirius), an 11-year-old dancer (Daniel Johansen Elmhari), and a 17-year-old classical singer (Stine Hole Ulla).[1]

Although the first five seasons had all aired in consecutive years, there was no 2013 season after the fifth season ended on 2012-12-07.[4]

Season 6 (2014)

Precasts

As part of the sixth season, preliminary auditions not for broadcast, sometimes called "precasts", were held in Bodø (2013-10-18), Tromsø (2013-10-19), Trondheim (2013-10-252013-10-26), Bergen (2013-11-012013-11-02) , Ålesund (2013-11-07), Kristiansand (2013-11-082013-11-11), Stavanger (2013-11-152013-11-16) and Oslo (2014-01-102014-01-11).[5] These would have been conducted by the show's producers, not the celebrity judges.

The signup period for the precasts started 2013-08-27 with different deadlines for the different locations. It was also possible to meet for open precasts without signing up beforehand. In Oslo the deadline for signing up was 2014-01-05.[6]

All contestants auditioning in Oslo had numbers starting with 7, the first contestant signing on got the number 7000. Angelina's contestant number, 7008,[7] indicates that she was the 9th contestant to sign up in Oslo. +  +  In Trondheim the contestant numbers started with the digits 1, 2 and 4; in Os the starting digits were 3, 5 and 6.

Contestants could also be "cast" on the show based on submitted recordings of their talents. This seems to be why some contestant numbers, like that of the large choral group VIVA, ended with a "D".[8] Since Angelina's number, 7008, did not end with a "D", it appears that she went through the normal precast process.

Auditions for broadcast

On-camera auditions were conducted in Trondheim, Os, and Oslo.[9] They were broadcast on the show in that order, in separate episodes covering the different locations. To be more specific, beginning with the season premiere on 2014-01-17, the auditions from Trondheim aired in the first two episodes, those from Os in the next two, and those from Oslo in episodes five through seven.[9]

Angelina's performances

Audition

Angelina auditioned singing "Gloomy Sunday" in the style of Billie Holiday's 1941 recording of the song, over a prerecorded instrumental track. This aired in the fifth episode of the season, on 2014-03-07. It appears to have been recorded on 2014-01-25,[15] as the last entry of the first day of the Oslo auditions,[7] which were held on 2014-01-25 through 2014-01-27.[16] Video of Angelina's performance was posted online by TV 2 at their website and on YouTube. +  The YouTube video went viral, leading to coverage by media outlets around the world, including Time, CNN, The Mirror (in the UK), People, and The Hollywood Reporter, all within four days of the broadcast. +  (See Media coverage while on Norske Talenter for more details.)

Backstage rehearsal

Second round

In the second round, Angelina performed "I'm a Fool to Want You" a cappella, again in the style of Billie Holiday. While the song choice was almost certainly her own, the decision to sing it a cappella was not hers: all singers who did not play an instrument had to sing a cappella in the second round. +

This was a "judges' eliminations" round ("judges' cuts"), in which the judges saw groups of similar acts all in a row, one after another (as opposed to different types of acts being presented in a more or less arbitrary order, as in the first round). This was so that the large field of contestants who had passed their auditions, could be reduced to 40 semifinalists, sorted into 5 programs of 8 acts each.

The session in which Angelina and the other singers performed happened on 2014-02-07[15] in Oslo and was broadcast on 2014-03-28, in the 8th episode of the season (the first of two episodes covering this round of the competition). According to what was presented in the broadcast, Angelina performed last.[17] Unlike in the other rounds, there was no live audience and the judges did not give each act feedback after they performed. Immediately following Angelina's performance (again, assuming the way the episode was edited matched reality), the contestants went backstage and the judges conferred in private to choose who would move on to the semifinals. They selected 11 contestants to remain in the competition and sent 7 of them home.

Semifinals

The third round of the competition, the 5 semifinals in Oslo, were broadcast live so that the viewers could vote for their favorites by phone or SMS, thus deciding which two acts in each semifinal would end up in the final. In the first of these — the 10th episode of the season, on 2014-04-11 — Angelina sang Nancy Sinatra's version of "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)" accompanied by guitarist Tommy Kristiansen, who had also accompanied her when she sang "Fly Me to the Moon" on the talk show Senkveld a month before. Angelina was the first act to be voted into the finals.

Final

In the live final episode on 2014-05-23, Angelina sang "Summertime" accompanied by trumpet player Eivind Hannisdal[18] and a prerecorded instrumental track in the style of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's 1958 recording for their joint album Porgy & Bess.

Angelina won the competition with 46% of the audience vote,[2] in a field of 10 final acts.[19] The second- and third-place acts (announced in a random order[20]), were 20-year-old dancer Daniel Grindeland and the four-member dance ensemble Juice Crew, aged 19–22.
