"Blue Moon" is a 1934 song originally written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart (with different lyrics) for the film Hollywood Party but not recorded for that film. After Hart wrote two more versions of the lyrics, the song was used in the film Manhattan Melodrama later that same year (sung as "The Bad in Every Man" by Shirley Ross). Hart wrote a fourth version of the lyrics at the urging of Jack Robbins, head of MGM's music publishing company, and that is the version that is known today. The song was popularized by its use as the opening theme music for the 1930s radio program Hollywood Hotel and was first released as a single by Ted Fio Rito and his orchestra, with vocals by Muzzy Marcellino, on 1934-10-19.[1]

The song charted twice in 1949, in versions by Billy Eckstine and Mel Tormé, but is most widely known today in versions recorded by Elvis in 1954, and by the doo-wop group The Marcels in 1961.[1]
