"Autumn Leaves" is the English version of a French song called "Les Feuilles mortes" ["The Dead Leaves"], originally composed by Joseph Kosma in 1945, with French lyrics by Jacques Prévert. This original song was first performed by Irène Joachim and Yves Montand in the 1946 film Les Portes de la nuit↗ [Gates of the Night] and was later sung on record by Montand, in 1949. The English lyrics were written in 1950 by Johnny Mercer and were first recorded by Jo Stafford in the same year. Many other popular vocalists have sung the song, including Bing Crosby in 1950, Steve Allen in 1955, Nat King Cole in 1955 (whose version was used in the 1956 film of the same name↗), Doris Day in 1956, and Frank Sinatra in 1957. Édith Piaf sang the song in both French and English in her version from 1951.[1]
The song has become one of the most recorded jazz standards, mostly in instrumental form, following recordings by Artie Shaw in 1950 and Stan Getz in 1952. Popular pianist Roger Williams had the most success with the song, hitting number one with his 1955 instrumental version (his first single).[1]
Angelina covered the song in the form of a music video posted to her YouTube CoverChannel on 2019-09-29. The video description says that it was recorded in 2016.[2] Reportedly this was filmed in London, in Green Park and St James' Park, likely in November 2016, when she was in London recording for Little Big Shots.[3]
